Salt Spring Island Heritage Map

This is a view of the wealth of information shown on the back of the Salt Spring Island Map of Treasures. 400 million years ago, Salt Spring Island was where present-day Tasmania is now located. It spent 200 million years drifting across the surface of the earth until it collided with North America.

NOTE - The 2005 version is still shown on this page.

HOW TO ORDER

About 400 million years ago, volcanic islands formed somewhere near present-day Tasmania and began to travel north and east on the spreading ocean floor. Over millions of years, these islands were surrounded by volcanic sediments and siliceous oozes and were several times injected with igneous rocks. At times, the island groups were surrounded by reefs, forming limestones.
