Island Heritage is Focus of Award Winning Salt Spring Island Map

Heritage Maps

Widely recognized as Salt Spring's best map, the newest edition of Island Pathways' Heritage Map ($8.50) is selling so well that we anticipate another reprint next year. In addition to a self-guided tour of heritage sites, it identifies bike routes, trail heads, beach accesses, parks, and altitudes throughout the Island.

Having trouble finding one? They are sold at the Chamber, Volume II Books, Salt Spring Books, and Sabine Books, as well as other locations on Vancouver Island. If you have suggestions concerning additional outlets or cannot find enough maps to fill all your stockings, please call our map's major promoter, Wendy Webb, at (250) 653-2311.

A "made on Salt Spring Island" heritage map has caught the attention of cartographers, teachers, history buffs and the general public with its classic heritage design and full colour map using Geographic Information Systems providing a wide range of information and earns its name as a "Map of Treasures." The fourth printing of the map was released early in 2006. See below to order a Heritage Map.

"The map is a self guided tour of Salt Spring's natural and human history," said Claire Heffernan the project coordinator and past president of Island Pathways. "Designed as a community resource for residents interested in preserving the islands heritage, we hope it will also encourage visitors to tour the island and see it from an entirely different perspective."

The map features nine geological sites, 43 heritage sites, 22 parks and trailheads (trail descriptions only), 10 points of interest, 14 heritage and scenic roads, 15 Aboriginal place names, 10 historic photographs, an ice age map, an artist's conception of Ganges and wildlife illustrations. Other information includes bike routes with distances and ratings, camping, telephones, washrooms, road safety, beach and lake public accesses and drinking water.

Contributors to the map project include the BC Heritage Trust, The Millennium Bureau of Canada, BC Hydro, BC Ferry Corporation, The Salt Spring Island Trust, Marilyn Thaden Dexter, SSI Conservancy, SSI Historical Society, Island Watch Society, Bill and Kathy Judge and Anke Smeele.

"Volunteers donated hundreds of hours to create a beautiful map and it's very gratifying to receive the Highest Achievement Award from the Heritage Society of BC," said Heffernan.

Proceeds from map sales support Island Pathways projects. The map is available in two formats: 4" x 9" brochure printed on 70 LB glossy for $8.50 (unfolds to about 24.5" x 31.5") and a previous issue poster set on 100 luna mat are now on sale for $5.00 plus shipping.

While you are on Salt Spring Island, the map is also available at the Chamber of Commerce, Volume II Books, Salt Spring Books, Sabines Books, Ganges Marina, Seabreeze Motel and several B&Bs.
